Center for Advanced 3D Optical Dimensional Measurement (CODM)

The University of Michigan

The Center for Advanced 3D Optical Dimensional Measurement (CODM) is a research and training consortia between industry partners and the Automotive Analysis Division (AAD) within The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).

The center objective is to support research, exchange technical information, and provide education and training in the field of 3D non-contact metrology as applied toward dimensional measurement and related engineering analysis activities such as Part Scanning, Reverse Engineering, Tolerance Analysis, and Digital Modeling and Assembly.

The Center focuses on the development of new engineering and analysis methods and applications that utilize advancements in 3D non-contact optical measurement technology.

For interdisciplinary research, the Center intends to study of this technology for applications in Automotive, Aerospace, Motorcycle, and Heavy Equipment. Among the specific research areas are:

Advanced Data Analysis Methods for Full 3D Part Measurement (e.g., scan data)

Applications in Tool Construction, Morphing, Reverse Engineering, and Process Development

As-Built Part Tolerance Simulation and Analysis

Digital Assembly/Virtual Part Matching

Advanced Process Modeling Techniques

Three main areas:

Interdisciplinary Research and Technology Assessment

Education and Training

Technical Exchange/Outreach
