Hi ladies:
Tryouts are around the corner and Coach Stern and I hope that you are taking the time to work on and develop all aspects of your game. Here's what I would be doing if I were a girl hoping to win a roster spot on one of the teams:
- All injury rehabs should spend the next few weeks reducing their core body-fat percentage. They should be actively involved with a reputable private soccer trainer that can help them develop their speed, muscular endurance and strength, their cardiovascular fitness and creative soccer skills. You must come back stronger, fitter, faster and more skillful than you were before your injury. Anything less and you will be setting yourself up for disappointment.
- NO ONE is guaranteed a varsity roster spot, even if you were on varsity last year. You will have to earn your position through hard work, through skill and by what you do on the field during tryouts THIS COMING YEAR!!!
- Goalkeepers should be spending time working on their footwork and agility, the catching of the ball, extension dives and saves, distribution with both feet, breakaways saves, and dealing with high crosses and set pieces.
- Defenders should be able to play the ball with both feet, should know the 5 D's of individual defending and work on becoming unbeatable in 1v1 scenarios. Defenders should also feel comfortable having to develop the play from the back, be able to play accurate long passes and the outside backs should work on their attacking and overlapping skills.
- Midfielders are expected to be excellent readers of the game. They should be excellent long and short passers, develop their ability to switch the point of attack, be great headers of the balls and also be great tacklers especially in 1v1 situations. The outside mids are expected to be great crossers of the ball with both feet and should possess the fitness to work up and down the flanks for 90 minutes nonstop.
- Forwards are expected to be great finishers. They should also be adept at holding the ball under pressure and linking the midfielders into the play. They should know how to make diagonal runs to create space for themselves or a teammate. They should work on their 1v1 defensive skills as well, along with their shooting, heading and controlling on their first touch under pressure.
That's what I would be working on if I were a girl attempting to make the team during tryouts. I surely would not be sitting around waiting on someone to get me started. I would be working daily on my fitness, core abdominal work, my speed and my ball skills. I would be self-directed, self-motivated and fully committed. But that's me...What about you?
