Kerry is Right

John Kerry argues that George Bush has handled both Iraq and the war on terror incompetently. Even as the situation in Iraq spirals towards ever-increasing chaos, George Bush continues to deny reality, preferring to live in the fantasy world of spin. John Kerry said from the beginning that launching a war prematurely, and going with too few allies, was a bad strategy. He also said that it was important that we not let Iraq distract us from the rest of the war on terror, and that we needed to deal with other serious problems: Al Qaeda, North Korea's nuclear weapons program, and the problem of unsecured nuclear materials in many parts of the world. Everything Kerry has said is supported by experts in military strategy, foreign policy and terrorism. George Bush has gotten us into a mess in Iraq and has made us more vulnerable to terrorists. John Kerry can get the job done in Iraq and keep us safer from terrorists. Here we give you supporting documentation and more information on how John Kerry proposes to handle Iraq, Afghanistan and the war on terror.

Bush Has Seriously Mishandled the Iraq War

"No one could have imagined back then that they would discard their own State Department's 11 volumes of plans for what to do; that they would not guard the borders; that they would not guard the ammunition dumps; that they would disband the army; that they would not keep a civil service structure in place; that they would not provide the electricity and provide the jobs and the services. This has been incompetently handled, mismanaged every step of the way." —John Kerry 9/21/04

What Went Wrong in Iraq
By Larry Diamond, from Foreign Affairs, September/October 2004

Summary: Although the early U.S. blunders in the occupation of Iraq are well known, their consequences are just now becoming clear. The Bush administration was never willing to commit the resources necessary to secure the country and did not make the most of the resources it had. U.S. officials did get a number of things right, but they never understood—or even listened to—the country they were seeking to rebuild. As a result, the democratic future of Iraq now hangs in the balance.

Toward a Secure America in a Secure World
By John Gershman, from Foreign Policy in Focus

Summary: The Bush administration's "war on terrorism" reflects a major failure of leadership and makes Americans more vulnerable rather than more secure. Not only has President George W Bush failed to support effective reconstruction in Afghanistan, but his war and occupation in Iraq have made the US more vulnerable and have opened a new front and a recruiting tool for terrorists while diverting resources from essential homeland security efforts.

The Bush Crusade
By James Caroll

The odd and tragic thing is that the world before Bush was actually nearing consensus on how to manage the problem of the proliferation of WMD, and had begun to put in place promising structures designed to prevent such spread. All of that has been trashed by Bush.
