Immigration Stuff

Haven't you heard the story by now? Well, we never (and I do mean never!) tire of sharing it, so here goes:

In February, 2001, Kristin finally decided to try online personals, after much prodding by her mother, some good examples set by some friends (thanks Lisa and Michelle!) and some research. She chose match.com, an online dating service that had a good reputation for helping people meet, and wrote up her profile.

Kristin put her profile up on Thursday, February 22, and began getting emails from young men, not so young men, and some REALLY young men, and resolved two things: not to respond to any men who lived more than 25 miles from Ann Arbor, and not to respond to any emails from men who didn't have a photo with their profile. She responded to one or two emails, but no one really caught her eye.

Sergio signed up for several different online dating services in October, 2000, with his friend Tony. In late February, 2001, Serge was in St. Louis for the wedding of his cousin, Kristina Vigna to Dan Wotawa. The weekend had not been an entire success (although the wedding was wonderful) because the day of the wedding, Serge had inadvertently backed into the bride's car! She was not in the car at the time, no one was injured but Sergio was not a happy camper at having his first accident ever.

Nonetheless, the wedding and spending time with his family was great, and on Monday, February 26, 2001, while hanging out at his Aunt Gina's house, he decided to surf the net on his Uncle Biaggio's computer. He logged into match.com and did a search for Catholic women at or under 5'7" tall, between the ages of 30 and 40, and who lived within 500 miles of Toronto. Kristin's profile came up, and he thought, wow, what a babe. (Hey, I'm the author, I can take some license, right?) He did not email her right away, but later the same day, he decided to search again, and again her profile came up

Sergio decided to send Kristin a quick email, with the subject: "Greetings from Toronto," little knowing of Kristin's "rules" about out-of-towners.

Kristin received the email, and opened it, despite the ominous subject. Immediately she realized that not only was this guy out of town, but he didn't have a picture online. Sergio's email, however, whetted her appetite, and he did offer to send her a photo if she was interested. Sergio had noted that they shared many interests, including love of family, and she decided to email him back. He was suitably impressed when there was an email in his mailbox when he got back to Toronto. They emailed for almost two weeks (Kristin's emails generally being six times as long as Sergio's, can you imagine?) and then began talking on the phone.

Kristin and Sergio had their first date on Monday, March 19, 2001, in Ann Arbor. Serge had business in Windsor that day, and was able to come into the States for dinner. They went to the Earle, a French/Italian restaurant in Ann Arbor, where they spent a few hours getting to know each other better over very good food in an intimate setting. They walked around downtown, then drove around Ann Arbor, continuing to find things in common and enjoying each other's company. Three weeks later, Serge was back in Ann Arbor (again because he had business in Windsor) and on April 19, Kristin took the train to Toronto to visit him.

By late May (right sweetie?) we just knew we were meant to find each other, and in July we started talking about marriage.

After what seemed an eternal wait for the ring, Sergio finally was able to pick it up from our jeweler, Angelo, on Friday, December 7. Kristin was in Toronto that weekend, and somehow, Sergio managed to keep that ring from burning a hole in his pocket. She drove home on Sunday and spent a very busy Monday at work, followed by a cookie exchange that night, and then a book club meeting. After all that, Kristin got home at about 9:45. She had only been home for 5 minutes when the phone rang, and it was Sergio. They talked for a minute, and he said he couldn't talk because he wasn't at home, and then told Kristin she had to get off the phone anyway because there was going to be a knock at her door. Then he hung up and there was a knock on the door. Kristin ran to the front door, not really understanding that he could actually be there, and when she opened the door, he dropped to one knee and said "Hello, Kristin, will you marry me?" Kristin, according to Sergio, said "yes, yes, yes!".

The ring, which was perfect and beautiful and exactly what we both had hoped for, looks like this (from several angles!):

ring

Isn't it a stunner?

Sergio had driven down on Monday, without telling anyone, and after visiting several clients, arrived in Ann Arbor around 6:15. He waited patiently (and not so patiently!) for her to come home, killing time by having dinner, browsing for books at the local Borders, and finally by sitting in his car for 45 minutes.

It was well worth the wait. Just like Sergio was for Kristin, and Kristin was for Sergio.
