Steps in Applying the Pedagogical Analysis Scheme

Modified Project 2061 Scheme for the Analysis of Curriculum Materials

Step 1: Identifying Benchmarks/Standards

Identify the benchmarks or standards you want students to learn. Gain a firm understanding of the benchmark or standard. Examine the materials to see if the benchmarks/standards are sufficiently covered in the materials. What does it mean to be "sufficiently covered"? You should find multiple sightings of the benchmark or standard.

Step 2: Identify the sightings were the benchmark or standard is dealt with.

Carefully examine the materials to identify the sightings were the benchmark or standard is dealt with.

Step 3: For each sighting, determine if the criterion is met (criterion and categories are described below)

Once you have examined the materials, you will then analyze criterion in the various categories.

The next step in the analysis requires that you determine if a sighting satisfies each criterion in a category. List all the sightings that pertain to a criterion. For each sighting, determine if the criterion is met, questionable, not met or doesn’t not apply. Write a short justification.

Step 3: Determine if the criterion is met for the set of sightings

The next step requires you to make a judgement if the entire set of sightings helps met a criterion in a particular category. For the entire set of sightings applied across a criterion, make a judgement if the materials sufficiently meet the benchmark. Write a justification.

Step 4: Determine if the Category is Met.

The next step requires you to make a judgement if the category would help students learn the benchmark. Analyzing across the various criteria in a category, make a judgement if the materials sufficiently deal with the benchmark. Write a justification. (Note: we are analyzing at most two criteria in a category and in most cases only one.)

Step 5: Determine if the materials help students learn the benchmarks.

You are now required to make a judgement if the materials as whole would help a student develop an understanding of the benchmark or standard. Analyzing across the categories and criteria, make a judgment if the materials will help students learn the benchmark. Write a justification.
