YEREVAN, August 5 (Noyan Tapan). The presentation of the UN AIDS
Project took place in Yerevan on August 5. The Project aims at
providing assistance to the National AIDS Program in the formulation
of the National Strategic Plan to a National Response to HIV/AIDS
based on priority activities identified through situational analysis,
response analysis, and strategic plan formulation at national and
regional levels mainly focused on HIV prevention among youth. The
Project also has a research components: the epidemiological study on
HIV/AIDS prevalence among drug users and the
qualitative research on knowledge, attitude, believes on HIV/AIDS
among youth. These studies will contribute to the formulation of the
National Strategic Plan through the identification of priority and
the design of effective preventive programs for youth. The cost of
the Project is 32,500 USD. The mediamen drew Project Expert Andrew
Amanto-Gauci's attention to the fact that the situation with AIDS
spread in Armenia has drastically changed now. HIV-carriers and
AIDS-stricken people are seeking treatment in Armenia with the
medicine invented by Armenian scientists and claimed to be
an effective remedy for AIDS. The expert said he was interested in
the given preparation but he had not visited the clinic were patients
are undergoing treatment with Armenicum. Besides, he added, no
scientific data regarding the drug had been provided to him. So, the
World Health Organization will consider AIDS to be beyond cure as
long as no official data is available. However, he emphasized, one
should consider the fact that prevention of this disease is necessary
in all cases.
