Service Class

In addition to the information about axle configuration, number of cylinders and type of steam, locomotives there is information about the locomotive’s service. This information was clearly posted on the locomotive’s cab. For example, for the BR 86, this is Gt 46.15. G = Güter or freight; t = tank engine; 46 refers to 4 driven axles and a total of 6 axles; 15 = axle loading which in this case is 15 tons. Other service classes are:

S –Locomotive with tender for passenger express service.

St – Tank engine for express passenger service

P – Locomotive with tender for passenger local service

Pt – Tank engine for local passenger service

G – Locomotive with tender for freight service

Gt – Tank engine for freight service

Z – Rack or cog locomotive

L – Branch line locomotive

K – Narrow gauge locomotive
