How to make a tree stand at home

If you have a Macaw one of the best web sites that I have found for information is Birds -N- Ways Macaw Talk Forum. The people on this board are very educated and have always been willing to help.

Tico is a 10 month old (April 2003) Blue & Gold Macaw. Tico's beak is a little crooked and has been since he hatched. This does not effect his eating or chewing ability and what a love........ We are assuming that Tico is a male since we have not had the DNA test done. We may decide at at later time to do this, but for now it doesn't matter to us.

Above from the left: Pictures 1 & 2-Tico at 5 months on one of his playstands. He just loves being in front of the window and watching the dogs play in the back yard. Picture 3-Tico loves stealing Daddy's hats.(5 Months), Picture 4-Tico on his tree stand

Pictured above: Tico's cage

When choosing the cage for your young Macaw keep in mind the amount of room needed for your bird. They need to be able to open and flap their wings and have sufficient height and depth to accomodate their long tails now and when full grown as well as still have plenty of room for the toys necessary to your birds health. Chewing comes naturally to Macaws and being an intelligent bird they need plenty of diversions. If you do not supply these diversions they can have health and behavior issues.

This is the natural playstand that Rick built for Tico. The base is 4ft X 4ft. with bathroom paneling on the bottom for ease in cleaning. We cut a branch from our own dwarf apple tree. If you choose to make a stand like this ensure that the tree has not been chemically treated for at least 2 years so that no harm can come to your bird.
