Teaching

My teaching interests parallel my research interests, focusing on integrating ecological questions with tools for investigation at different spatial scales. In my remote sensing courses I believe that students and scientists need to thoroughly understand the nature of the data and its physical principles and then develop skills in interpretation, image processing, and problem-solving to analyze the data

NRE 441: Remote Sensing of Environment.

This 4-credit Lecture/Lab course provides a thorough introduction to the theory, sensors, methods, and applications of remote sensing to environmental monitoring and management.

If you have further interest in GIS, spatial analysis, and/or remote sensing consider our Graduate Certificate in Spatial Analysis

What motivates my work is recognition of the increasing impact of humans on critical forest and landscape ecosystem pattern, process, and ultimately, sustainability. These impacts can be studied at different spatial scales using remote sensing and spatial analysis. Technologies such as remote sensing allow us to *see* at broader spatial scales as well as to sense information about ecosystems in parts of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond what our eyes can see. Spatial analysis increasingly allows us to investigate the patterns of ecosystems and their emergent properties at different levels of organization. Knowledge gained from field studies, remotely sensed data, and spatial analysis techniques can be used to build models that help scientists and resource managers to understand the implications of human actions on sustainability of our planet`s environmental resources and health.
