James Calkins enrolled 8 August 1862 as a private in Company B, 154th Regt. NY Volunteers.
He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg 1 July 1863 and died at U.S. General Hospital, Annapolis,
24 August 1863, age 21 years.
He was the son of Derick and Ruth Calkins of Ellicottville, NY.

His grave is in the shadow of the large tree.
