Johanna was born in the village of Herveld, municipality of Valburg, Gelderland, Netherlands, on 2 April 1842. Her parents were Hermanus H. van Rheeden and Evadena van den Wiltenburg. She emigrated to America and to Michigan with her family in 1847 at the age of 5 years.
