Women's World Cup
One sport that is having trouble seating all its spectators is women’s soccer and specifically seating them at the world cup. On June 29, 1999 “Total attendance well in excess of 600,000 appears assured in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” (Langdon). Stadiums are expanding their capacities to fit all the fans into the stands. Jack Kent Cooke Stadium originally was fit for 41,000 but since tickets sales already surpassed that amount it is being expanded to almost 55,000, (Langdon). Not only has there been an increase in spectators in the stadium itself there are many fans who watch the game on television as others who keep themselves updated by checking the internet sites for the current scores and game standings. “Television ratings were 1.7 on ABC for the U.S. – Denmark opener, 1.85 on ESPN for U.S. – Nigeria, and 1.96 on ESPN2 for U.S.- North Korea,” (Langdon). “The Women’s World Cup sire on the internet is getting 2 million hits ‘on game days…from 94 countries (total)…and 1.5 million hits on off-days,” (Langdon).
