Harris Poll
Polls have shown that society wants more women’s professional sports and that they want to go out to the games and support the teams. There is a need, however, to promote the sports perhaps differently than men’s pro sports, so people who are interested in supporting know when the games are on and who the players are. “Surprisingly, men are more likely than women to watch not just all sports but also women's sports. Fully 81% of men watch some sports and 46% of men watch women's sports, compared to 60% of women who watch any sports and 33% who watch women's sports,” (Humphrey). It is not only women who are interested in women’s sports; men enjoy them as well. Men like sports period. It doesn’t matter what basketball game is on the television they will watch it because they are a fan of the sport, not just specific teams and players. The Harris Poll shows the interests in sports teams and events. The most popular women’s sports are basketball, tennis, and figure skating (Humphrey). In fact more people watch women’s tennis than men’s. “In a USA Today poll, 75 percent of tennis fans said they preferred the women’s game,” (Young). Some people claim this is because of the new titanium rackets that are ruining the men’s game because they are getting too powerful and thus have shorter rallies. Regardless of the reasons, women’s tennis is preferred over men’s tennis. Even though the men’s players may have greater strength and would probably easily beat many of the women players the women’s matches are considered more entertaining, and the sport industry is an entertainment industry.
