Homework for Math 217, Fall 2008


  • Homework 1, due September 16th: p.11 Ex.18; p.12 Ex.28; p.26 Ex.19,20,29,31; p.48 Ex.18-19; p.56 Ex.25; p.71 Ex.1-2-3-4.

    Besides the homework you should read the book. So far we have covered most of chapter 1 and the remaining will be covered during the next couple of classes. I would suggest you to solve the suplementary problems in pages 102-104.

  • Homework 2, due September 24th: p.117 Ex.16,23,24; p.127 Ex.29,30,31,32,33; p.132 Ex.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8; p.133 Ex.38.

    So far we have covered most of chapter 1 and 2 and the remaining will be covered during the next couple of classes. I would suggest you to solve the suplementary problems in the end of these chapters.

  • Homework 3, due October 1st: p.174 Ex.21-30 (meaning 21,22,...,30); p.182 Ex. 19-26; p.190 Ex.9-13.
    Important note: Only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    As always, I recommend you to check if you know how to solve the suplementary problems in the end of chapters 1,2 and 3.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1 and 2 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6,2.7). In class I recommended you to read sections 2.4 and 2.5 by yourselves, and here I am doing it again. During this week, or at latest at monday the 29th, I will conclude with chapter 3 (all sections). We will continue more or less in the order of the book. However, since I treated the end of chapters 1 and 2 in more detail than in the book, we will go quite fast over the first 6 sections of this chapter.

    Note: Next wednesday, namely the 1st, I will teach but I will NOT have office hours since I will be at the time flying over the Atlantic.

  • Homework 4, due October 8st: p.190 Ex.14; p.191 Ex. 19-24; p.199 Ex.5-10 and Ex.24-26; p.200 Ex. 31-36.
    Important note: Only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    As always, I recommend you to check if you know how to solve the suplementary problems in the end of chapters 1,2 and 3.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1, 2 and 3 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6,2.7 and part of 3.3). Besides the recommendation last week, I recommended you to read section 3.3 by yourselves. We will continue now with chapter 4 in the order of the book; many of the things here I made in quite detail for R^n, so it should not be so difficult. I expect to spend 5-6 classes on this but it could be more or less.

  • Homework 5, due October 15: p.223 Ex.15-18; p.224 Ex.21-22; p.225 Ex.31-34; p.234 Ex.3-16; p.235 Ex.30; p.243 Ex.1-8.
    As always, only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1, 2 and 3 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6 and 2.7). We have also covered 4.1-4.3 completely and parts of other sections in chapter 4. I think that to complete chapter 4 will take until next wednesday.

  • Homework 6, due October 22: p.253-255, Ex.5-8,Ex.13-14,Ex.18-22; p.260-261 Ex.5-8,Ex.13-18,Ex.21-28; p.276-277 Ex.1-6, Ex.13-14
    As always, only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6, 2.7, 4.8 and 4.9). After the midterm exam next wednesday, October 22nd, I will start with chapter 5.

    For the MIDTERM, recall that the exam is in class and that you are not allowed to used neither books, cheat sheets, calculators or anything of this sort. Also, at monday the 20th there will be NO OFFICE HOURS.

  • Homework 7, due November 5: p.308-309, Ex.1-8, Ex.25-30; p.317-318, Ex.9-14, Ex.18-19; p.325-326, Ex.1-2, Ex.7-14., Ex.23-26.
    As always, only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6, 2.7, 4.8 and 4.9). By the end of this week we will have covered 5.1-5.3. Sections 5.4-5.5 will be covered during the first half of next week. Once we are done with this we will cover the end of chapter 5 but also 4.9, the section on Markov chains.

    So far we have covered all of chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6, 2.7, 4.8 and 4.9) and section 5.1-5.5. During the next couple of classes, I will cover 5.6, 5.7 and 4.9. Afterwards, we will start chapter 6.

  • Homework 9, due November 19: p.296-297, Ex.5-8, Ex.18; p.334, Ex.11-16; p.341, Ex.7-12; p.383, Ex.22-28; p.392 Ex.7-16.
    As always, only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    So far we have covered all of chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6, 2.7, 4.8 and 5.8) and started with chapter 6. By the end of this week I hope to have covered 6.1-6.4.

  • Homework 10, due November 26: p.400-401, Ex.3-12, Ex.19-20; p.407-408, Ex.1-6, Ex. 9-12; p.416-417 Ex.1-12.
    As always, only the even numbered problems will be graded.

    So far we have covered chapters 1 to 6 but sections (1.10,2.4,2.5,2.6, 2.7, 4.8, 5.8, 6.7 and 6.7). By the end of this week I will have covered the remaining of Chapter 6 and started Chapter 7.
