Do I need to know German?

  • Though a knowledge of German is desirable and will be beneficial, elementary level speakers, i.e., by May 2004, who express a strong interest in learning about German and German culture, are encouraged to apply to the program. Students who have had no German at the time of application are strongly encouraged to enroll in RC Core 191 (RC Intensive German I) in Winter 2004.
  • Elementary speakers will be paired with a more advanced speaker in the project. All participants, regardless of their level of proficiency, will be expected to participate in project events, including events that are conducted completely in German. Grappling with and reflecting on the alienating nature of “foreign” language and culture are important aspects of the project and a part of our study!
  • Several aspects of the project will not require a knowledge of German.
