Unfortunately, no one can be told what the
Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

Math 417 / Section 4

Matrix Algebra

Fall 2017

Text: Otto Bretscher, Linear Algebra with Applications (5th ed.), Prentice-Hall, 2013.
We will cover most of Chapters 1-8 except Chapter 4. I will be expecting you to read the relevant sections of the book, and not merely use the text as the place where you look up homework problems. Math 419 uses the same text, but has a more theoretical emphasis.

Important: If you are planning to do a Math concentration, you must take Math 217, not Math 417. Math 217 is more advanced.

See our mini-catalog of all Math Courses below 600.

Prerequisite: Three semesters of calculus, such as the sequence Math 115-116-215 or its equivalent.

Homework is important!
There will be approximately 10 problem sets, posted below. You can hand in your assignments either in class or at my office (4854 East Hall) by 5:00pm of the date due--usually a Monday. The first homework set will be due on Monday, September 18. Depending on the number of hours allotted to the grader, it is possible that not all assigned homework problems will be graded.

NO LATE HOMEWORK!

Collaboration on the homework is fine, but each person is responsible for writing up his or her own solutions.

Exams:

The hour exams will be held in class; no makeups will be given.

Students with verified disabilities: If you think you need an accommodation for a disability, please let me know as soon as possible. In particular, a Verified Individualized Services and Accommodations (VISA) form must be provided to me at least two weeks prior to the need for a test accommodation. VISA forms are issued by the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (G664 Haven Hall).

Grades: will be weighted as follows

40%(Final) + 20%(Exam 1) + 20%(Exam 2) + 20%(Homework)

Your lowest homework set score will be dropped.
