JOY ROHDE
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Joy Rohde is an assistant professor at the Ford School of Public Policy and a faculty member in the Science, Technology, and Society Program; she also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of History. Joy is interested broadly in the role that experts—and especially social scientists—have played in American policy, both domestic and foreign, since the late 19th century. Her book, Armed with Expertise: The Militarization of American Social Research during the Cold War was published in 2013 by Cornell University Press. She is currently working on a book project tentatively titled, “The Cybernetic State: Social Science, Information Technology, and American Governance, 1955-1985.” The project examines the origins and consequences of data-driven, computational approaches to governance in the United States. Specifically, it traces researchers’ and policymakers’ efforts to use cybernetic theory and new information technologies to predict social change and manage social systems at scales ranging from the neighborhood to the international community.
