2002-03: Several from Underdog beginnings were still going strong in the 2002-03 year. Mark Krasberg and Robert Nosse played anything I asked them. I have to add Emily O'Donnell and Jen Beyer who along with Marilyn Loyd and Betty Hockett allowed me to enter all of those co-rec sports. Not just because of their participation, but because of the people they recruited. Hai Huynh my office mate for the last seven years, really came through in helping me organize the innertube waterpolo and the swim & dive, as well as playing in several other sports Michael Rimler with his contributions in flag football, and other participation. Kelly O'Brien who brought our cross-country and relay teams into respectability, as well as being the star of our flag football team. Chris Fedorko and Joe Remesz have helped me immensly this year, not only by participating in numerous sports, but by checking out jerseys and just generally getting things organized at the start of the game. Mike "Gazebo" Rimler went one step further and did that at a couple of the soccer games that I couldn't attend. Emily is going strong, she won the Co-Rec athlete of the year. Kelly has already won the fastest co-rec female in the Cross Country event this year. Erin Sigelko helped us win the co-rec softball championship. Jeff Braziunas answered my posting on the free agent board for flag football, played serveral winter sports with the Underdogs and won the GFS athlete of the year. Bill Austin didn't become an Underdog until spring, but he's been an awesome addition to the softball squad. 2004-05: The Underdogs added a first place finish in the independent women's division of the ASP points competition. Nora Molitor led the way and was rewarded by being named the Marie 'Pete' Hartwig overall female athlete of the year. She wasn't alone: Katie Sheline loves broomball and enthusiastically played any sport. Sue Johnson and Erin Sigelko returned to help bring the underdog women a softball championship. Jessica Berry played in lots of sports, and spread word of the Underdogs through the law school, catching the ears of Kristen Boike and Lisa Kaegi who along with Jared Wadley and Seun Phillips have made the Underdogs 2-time co-rec AA basketball champs. Susan Monheit has led the charge in soccer. Stephanie Mansour. has more team spirit in her little finger than any of our opponents that I saw had on their entire team. I don't know if Liz Crider comes naturally to that type of spirit or if she's just picked it up from osmosis. The Underdogs have been good in wallyball, but without Jordan Bates we wouldn't have defended our co-rec title, and he's even better at Volleyball. Russell Golman stole a quarter-final broomball game, shutting 'em out in regulation and shoot out. 2005-06: Of course I'd like to thank all of the people who returned from 2004-05, like Marilyn, Jessica, Jordan, Jeff, Hai, Stephanie, Russell, Erin, etc. New thanks go out to Tom Dillon, David Jones, Caitlin Bain, and even though Matt Vivian only played innertube waterpolo with us, I really enjoyed his attitude. Underdog beginnings: I'd like to thank all of the people who have played for me, but I can't remember them all. For the teams that I kept stats they're listed. There are several that aren't listed. I'll start with Jim (James N.) Campbell he was an excellent player, who played for me when every week it was a struggle to get enough players to avoid a forfeit. Mark Krasberg, has his named etched on the "Earl Riskey" trophy for being 1996 IM All-around male athlete of the year. For over two years he was an assistant manager of the Underdogs, and in 2002-03 mentored me into being the Earl Riskey winner. Mirek Bobek brought my team up to another level with his play, his leadership and his enthusiasm. Ian Jones a man who offered to let me play on his team. Jonathan Metzl who brought up the idea of getting together a city league team, and who has been the most enthusiastic Underdog since R. Tieg Whaley. My sister Marilyn Loyd who is the one person I can count on more than anyone else. Betty Hockett who's wallyball instincts are as good as anyone's. Andrew Bauer the best shortstop I've ever had. Jeremy Hall helped keep the Underdogs on top. Geoff Ward and his Sociological Imagination teammates who allowed me to play one year when I wasn't up to the recruiting challange. My first IM team with Gregg Radzely, Nick Feldman, Ethan Kane, Sarah Bowen, and Shane Bursae. The man who has won Most Improved Player six years running, Robert Nosse. Rich Gallagher for recuriting Liz Suhay. Jen Beyer who is always playing through an injury. Paula Payton who got me back in the manager business in Summer 2000 when I was thinking that it was too hard to recruit players. That team was mediocre, but since then Underdogs have been good, whether it's Tom Guglielmo and Vince Rogalski, or Shawn Gordon and Jake Hill. |

This page isn't dedicated to the cartoon character, but he is cool. So after naming my intramural softball team Law School in 1994 and Free Agents in 1996, I decided I needed to come up with a better name. I didn't want something pompous sounding like Loyd's Louisville Sluggers or World's greatest athletes. Something simple, one or two words, something that didn't provoke unwarranted expectations. I thought of an underdog. Yes. Then I thought about the cartoon character and the name fit like a glove. So ever since then my IM teams have been the Underdogs. While playing in the summer 2002 IM softball season, Jonathan Metzl proposed the idea of getting a city league team together starting with players from our current team. Ian Jones handled the managerial duties for the fall 2002 season, and needed a name for the team. We decided to apply the Underdog moniker to our city league team as well. About the same time, Dave Siegle asked me if I participated in any other IM sports. I had done Wallyball in Fall 2001, but for the most part I had stuck to just softball. I looked and saw that the IM All-Sport winner in Grad/Fac/Staff had only done five sports in 2001-02. So I went into 2002-03 with the idea of entering the Underdogs in 7 or 8 sports in GFS and winning the ASP all-year points. It's taken off from there. |
