Hello!

Generalist, programmer, data analyst, data scientist, web developer, and more, I am on the left in the adjacent picture. On the right is my very brilliant and wonderful wife, Natalie, who, like myself, loves to read, has an affinity for knowledge of most anything, cooks great meals (yes, I do too :) ), and wants to see the world.

I am currently employed under the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (NOAA-GLERL) in Ann Arbor, MI.

Many thanks goes to all who (or that) have funded my work thus far. These entities include the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, CIGLR, the International Joint Commission's International Watersheds Initiative, the US Army Corps of Engineers out of Detroit, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data, and NOAA-GLERL.

Accomplishments:

  • Development of a Bayesian Network simulated via Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling that effectively and efficiently closes the water balance of the Laurentian Great Lakes, utilizing multiple observation sources
  • Development of a SQL (PostgreSQL) database for real-time remote sensing (buoy) data, making data more accessible to scientists and stakeholders via a web interface
  • Development of web applications in HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and Adobe Flash utilizing secure, text-based or JSON encoded data sets:
    • Great Lakes Dashboard Project
    • Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloooms (HABs) and Hypoxia data browsers covering routine manual sampling, automatic real-time, and model output data
    • Map explorer for the Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System (GLANSIS)
  • Processing of, collectively, multiple terabytes of data for web consumption (as above) and for scientific inquiries of multiple scientists and stakeholders
  • Refactored and redesigned software as necessary for increased efficiency and better documentation
  • Aiding in and producing of publications and presentations to communicate scientific findings and software developments to the community and public
  • Management of a website utilizing a Content Management System (CMS)
  • Providing valuable input into the ongoing development of a sustainable and scalable Information Technology platform for scientific research and development
