Functions are a very important mathematical concept with endless real world applications. Calculus is a tool for carefully studying functions. Math 115 is an introductory course designed to familiarize the student with the basic ideas and techniques of calculus. In contrast to the type of calculus courses typically taught in high schools, where students are trained to be calculators, the emphasis of this course is on developing the student's problem solving skills and solidifying their understanding of the core concepts of calculus.
This course will cover the first six chapters of the text book, covering major topics such as: limits, continuity, difference quotients, differentiation, linear approximation, optimization, related rates, Riemann sums, integration, and the fundamental theorem of calculus.
The material in this course is deceptively difficult. As such, the student is expected to spend a significant amount of time studying each week. The information in this course is cumulative, so do not fall behind.
