Novi in Motion

How fast can you run? If you run 6 miles in 20 minutes, how many miles per hour would you be running?

What about the rest of your class? Can they run as fast as you can? Faster? Can you predict how far the whole class could run in an hour if you totalled everyone's running?

Today's work will have you enter information about yourself and the other people in your class in a spreadsheet program. The program will graph your speed as well as the speed of the others, and will let you make predictions about how far and how fast you could run.

To get started, you should:

  1. Click on this icon: . You should see a file marked "Motion!" appear on your computer's desktop (the colored background to the right of this window).
  2. Double click the icon to open the file.
  3. At the top of the screen, you'll see a box which looks like this:

Type your name where you see the words "TYPE NAME HERE". Type your 100 yard dash and/or twenty minute run time in the boxes marked "DASH TIME HERE" and "RUN MILES HERE"

  4. Below the "Your Information" box, you'll see a grid which looks something like this:

When you typed your name in the top box, it should automatically get entered in the row of the grid marked "1". Notice that the computer calculates your speed in miles per hour.

  5. The next thing you're going to do is type in information for other people in your class. Your teacher may have you enter data for the whole class, or she may have you work in small groups. As you enter the data, take a look at the graph (you'll have to scroll to the right on your screen to see it). Notice how the graph and the average and total figures change as you enter more data.
