Busted!

An Investigation Into Automotive Velocity

Today you and your class are going to find out just how fast the cars are going out in front of Novi Meadows School. Are they law-abiding citizens? Or law-breaking criminals? You'll find out today.

The whole class will work together to gather the data. You teacher will line you up outside along the road, spread apart at 10 meter intervals. You'll be in groups of two or three, with one person holding a stopwatch and the other(s) writing data in a noteboodk. Your teacher will be at the end of the line, holding up a flag.

As soon as a car passes, your teacher will drop her flag and you should start your stopwatch. As soon as the car passes you, stop your stopwatch and tell the person recording the data what the time was (in seconds). You'll do this for a few cars, then head back for class to plot the data.

To plot the data, you'll be using a spreadsheet. With it, you'll be able to create a graph of the information, from which you'll be able to figure out how fast the cars were travelling.

If you click on the icon below, a spreadsheet file will appear on your desktop (the colored area to the right of this window). Your teacher will tell you whether or not she wants you to use this file.
