VISUALIZATION
The visualization application consists of a data display and a number of interface widgets which allow the user to control what data is displayed and how. This structure is based upon the concept of dynamic querying, which allows the user to quickly and easily search a complex space across a number of different criteria. Because the data display reacts in real-time to changes made to the search criteria, and these changes are presented visually, users are able to partially offload the analytical overhead of decision making onto the perceptual system. This aids in building intuition about the interaction between a number of criteria in a complex environment.
The display has two primary modes. First, a macro-view in which the entire space of roughly five thousand stocks is displayed at once, ranked according to the portfolio optimization potential of each. Second, a micro-view in which a much smaller subset of the stock-space is displayed, allowing for detailed characteristics of each potential investment to be presented.
