| VISUALIZATION STRATEGIES IN SECURITY ANALYSIS___ school of information 649 : information visualization fall 1998 |
MOTIVATION
The financial markets are intriguing in that they are both extraordinarily complex (because of the number of investors, the number and variety of potential investments, the speed of communications and interactions, the ambiguous mix of fundamental and psychological factors which determine a security's price, etc.) and yet implicitly those who choose to invest in the markets feel they can extract from this complexity an effective profit-making strategy.
The main goal, then, was to determine the methods used to extract meaningful information from the markets, how this information is converted into actual buy/sell decisions, and how a visualization system could be used to make these decisions more quickly, more accurately, more consistently, and in the end, more profitably.
