Tamashek Dictionary
This is a nonfinal draft of a Tamashek-English-French Dictionary to be published shortly by Karthala (Paris). The editors of Karthala have changed the final entry format somewhat, so the appearance will be substantially changed. The Dictionary includes data primarily from the following dialects, all from Mali: T-ka (Timbuktu.area-Kal Ansar), T-md (Timbuktu.area-Imeddedeghan), R (Gourma Rharous area), K (Kidal), and A-grm (Gourma area across Niger River from Ansongo). In headings, N indicates a cross-reference to the dictionary for Tamashek of the Republic of Niger by Prasse et al. Occasional citations of DTF are to the 4-volume dictionary of Algerian Tuareg by Charles de Foucauld.
Entries are organized into word-families by "consonantal root," a theoretical fiction that is useful for navigation. However, causatives and instrumental nominals, both with prefix -s- (subject to assimilation to any other sibilant in the stem) are given their own entries to avoid over-cumbersome entries (cross-references are given back and forth from simple to -s-containing "roots").
The dictionary is soon to be copyright, so please do not download or print the pdf's. The manuscript will be withdrawn from my website on publication. However, I do have contractual authorization to include the Tamashek lexical material on a future Berber website.
My fieldwork on Tamashek was financed jointly by the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
