"Many nineteenth century women, particularly at mid-century, and particularly from the middle class, took their duties as "Angel of the House" seriously, using their writing to project the spiritual and affective values they associated with this (Christian evangelical) interpretation of their sphere" (Bennet Introduction).

A Literary Woman's Life - Mary B. DeLamarter

by Yvonne Marchand

How are the poems written by a turn of the century minister's wife an effective springing ground for exploring religious and literary ideas concerning American women, and more specifically Michigan women, of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?

Based on a collection of Mary B. DeLamarter's scrapbook materials including original manuscripts, newspaper clippings, etc. that gave an overview of her literary life. The collection was found in the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, for a research project in Professor Julie Ellison's Honors 251 Seminar, entitled the Poetry of Everyday Life. Gracious thanks to the Bentley Library for all of their assistance in the working of this project.

Who was Mary B. DeLamarter/ Mrs. Louis DeLamarter? (1849-1938)
