Greek Culture

The Greek Culture One way the "college man" or "college woman" could go. The Greek system in the early 1920's was a large part of many students lives. The twenties were a periodpf tremendous growth for the Greek system. By the end of 1924, the system consisted of sixty national and local fraternities,twenty-four professional fraternities, and twenty-two sororities. At this time, 32% of U of M's men and 22% of its women were members of the system. The system not only provided a place to live, but a social life as well. It created an environment conducive to meeting people and forming a group of friends. The fraternities and sororities also created their own activites and events including sports tournaments, formal dances, parties, and serenades. The Greek system gave the students an opportunity to join a group and to be a part of something. The Greek system was and still is a student run organization in which an Interfraternity Council governs the men and a Panhellenic Association governs the women.
