The Men Behind the Humor

Waldo W. Gower, a native of Southbend, Indiana, was the driving force behind "The Michigan Yearbook of Cartoons," completing the project before he graduated in 1922 from the school of literature, arts, and sciences. Throughout his years in Ann Arbor, he was extremely involved in the university. He worked as a member of the art staffs of both the University of Michigan yearbook, The Michiganensian, and The Gargoyle , a student run publication. He was also a member of the student council, the class advisory committee, and the Craft Man's club. Gower was honored and recognized in The Michiganensian by his peers as a "Male in the Lime Light." He was someone who stood out at the university and was respected for his talent as a cartoonist and his involvement in campus publications.

Gower created "The Michigan Yearbook of Cartoons" with the help of several other students. However, many of the students appear as nicknames and at this point, I have not found out exactly who they are. A major contributor to the project, however, was Joseph Alfred Avery, who also graduated from LSA, but was a member of the class of 1921. Also a native of Southbend, Indiana, Avery was involved in the student council, the Comedy Club, and theater. Like Gower, he spent much of his time working for The Michiganensian staff, and contributing his talents to the campus publications.
