WINDOWS NT MAGAZINE UPDATE TIP OF THE WEEK
TIP: OVERCOME USER ID CONFLICT
When connecting to a share on another system (for example, MACHINEA), you might suddenly
receive the following message: "The credentials supplied conflict with an existing
set of credentials."
This occurs when you have connected to the machine with another user ID. If you are not
aware of what user ID you used and you want to use another ID, you can disconnect the
previous share by entering the following command:
NET USE \\MACHINEA\IPC$ /DELETE
You should now be able to successfully reconnect to MACHINEA.

CLEANING UP THE REGISTRY
Every time you install, uninstall or reinstall software on a Windows NT computer, changes are made to the registry keys. After time, this leaves the Registry in a less than perfect state and you may run into problems. To clean up the Registry, use RegClean.exe (version 4.1a), available for download at http://support.microsoft.com/support/downloads/dp3049.asp. When you run RegClean.exe, the utility automatically scans the Registry and you will see a progress window. Wait until scanning is finished, which can take up to 30 minutes. If no errors were found, you are prompted to exit the utility. If errors are found, you can still choose to exit RegClean without fixing errors, or you can choose Fix Errors to clean up the Registry. RegClean creates a file called UNDO xxx.REG (XXX contains the computer name, date and time). Run this file if you want to undo the changes RegClean made.

NAMEWIZ BY SOFTBYTE LABS
Have a ton of files to rename? It doesn't have to be a tedious task. NameWiz makes it much easier and faster to rename sequentially named files at one time to whatever you desire. It is particularly useful for graphics files downloaded from the Internet or those that may be in your browser's cache that you want to save. It can also be useful for programmers or those who create sequential versions of text files and so on. Operating the program is simple. Just select the file extension, type in the new name, and the files are renamed en masse. Also, once you purchase NameWiz, you'll never have to pay again for any updates.

POWER TOYS
Microsoft's Web site contains an item called Power Toys, which is a set of extremely useful utilities. The tools can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/winntw.asp. With it, users can do things such as making adjustments to the Windows interface that would normally require modifying Registry settings. Among others, it also includes an updated version of the Send To menu and adds drag-and-drop capabilities to the Find menu.
