OK, at long last we're ready to do what we started out to do! Here's the setup... Use a blank tool to set a solid depth stop that you can adjust with the compound slide. Remember to lock the saddle so it doesn't shift on you, and don't forget to take up the backlash in the compound! To get an accurate hole you should first drill it a bit undersized; I started with a "D" drill since this is a pretty good fit in the original primer well. The overall depth will be about 0.47" (again, your rifle may be different, so double check!), so set the stop for a depth of .43" or so. After the first drilling, move up to a "J" drill - one size smaller than the final one - and drill to the same depth as before. Remember to adjust the depth stop to compensate or the different lengths of the drill bits! Then move up to the "K" drill and again drill until it just bottoms out. Adjust the depth stop for an additional 0.020" or so, making sure it's still less than the final depth you want. |
