What is a bicubic mesh?

It's a primitive object in POV that allows for the construction of very natural curved surfaces. In essence, it is a three-dimensional flexible sheet that can have either one minima, one maxima, or one saddle point. Or for you more application-oriented individuals... ever seen the Shell credit card commercial where the card dances? Well, that's basically one bicubic mesh. Yes... they're that flexible and smooth. None 'o this polygon approximation of 3-D surfaces crap... it's a PRIMITIVE... one object! Pretty cool, eh? Well, if you don't think so yet, read on. Ok, if you do think so... well... read on.

What does it look like and what can it do for me?

Well, let's start from the very beginning... A very good place to start. Ahem... ok, so I can't sing... I'll stick to graphics.

Like I said, a bicubic mesh is basically a flexible sheet.

We can yank the corners out...

... or forward or backward...

... or opposite ways...

... and twist it.

Or we can grab the sides and pull.

Or even in the middle.

Read on to learn how to use bicubics in POV.
