NOAH CASTLEMAN DAVES Born: 1779 in Wales. Emigrated in late 1700s. Married: 1803 MEHITABLE SEWARD Born: 1785 __________________________________________________ Son of NOAH & MEHITABLE DAVES: DANIEL CASTLEMAN DAVES Born: June 16, 1820 in Cincinnati, Ohio Married: - - - AVELINE CONLEE Born: Feb. 14, 1828 in Materon, Illinois Note: Daniel Castleman Daves had 18 kids. He was a minister in Springfield, Illinois. He took the family by an oxen-drawn wagon train to California in 1849. Six months were spent on the route. They arrived in Marysville, He and some sons followed the mining to Tombstone, Arizona. Delmer speculated that Daniel must have known Abraham Lincoln when he emigrated. Note: A Louis Daves is buried on Boot Hill in Tombstone, but he died of natural causes. __________________________________________________ Children (suppose to be 18 children) of DANIEL & AVELINE DAVES: ALONZO EUGENE MARY E. EDGAR FRANCES EDGAR FRANCES DAVES Born: Illinois, Feb. 14, 1848 (the year before their crossing to the Pacific) Married: On Santa Teresa Ranch in Santa Clara County, California JANE FROST Born: July 9, 1854 __________________________________________________ Son of EDGAR & JANE DAVES ARTHUR LAWRENCE DAVES Born: San Jose, Calif. on Oct. 29, 1880 Married: Dec. 14, 1880 NAN POWER FUNGE Born: Dec. 14, 1880 in Ogden, Utah Note: Father of NANNY POWER FUNGE was William Washington Funge. William was born in Courtown Harbor County, Wexford, Ireland-in Dec. 1844. He fought in Union Army & led wagon trains - From Independence, Missouri to either California or Utah. 19 crossings in all. Note from Michael Daves: It's significant, and very touching to me, that both the Daves and the Funges were of pioneering stock---with my side of the Daves's here, at the time of the Gold Rush. William Washington Funge, born on Christmas Day, 1844, in Courtown Harbour, County Wexford, led wagon trains for a living, after fighting in the Union Army for four years, during the Civil War, where he learned how to do this. He went in as a 'Substitute' for a wealthy Bostonian, as did many Irishmen, who had newly arrived. In his retirement years, he and his wife lived with the Authur Daves family. This coincided with my father's first 16 years, so Father grew up hearing about WW's many crossings from Independence, Mo., to either Utah or California. (In one of his journals, he said that he had to track and then kill an Indian, for stealing a horse.) Father also heard WW's stories about Ireland, and what the English did to the Irish during the Potato Famine. How over 800,000 Irish starved to death in the 1840s, as a deliberate policy of the English government---during all of which Ireland was exporting vegetables, grain and live-stock to England, with armed-guards making sure these shipments took place "without interference." England had conquered Ireland centuries earlier, and this was all part of the Absentee Landlord system. Another million, including WW Funge, were forced to emigrate - or stay in Ireland and starve. England, don't forget, was the greatest economic and political power of the 19th Century. What the English did to the Irish was the 19th Century version of genocide. WW Funge never forgave or trusted the English. Father grew up with these stories, and he told many of them to me. WW lived with the Arthur Daves family, as Nan was the daughter to whom he was closest. He lived into his mid-'80s. One tough Irishman. In his will, he asked that his body be shipped back to Ireland to be buried. The Daves honored this. You see, Jay, why I know much more about the Funges than the Daves. All those incredible stories. Today, the remaining Funges are either in County Wexford or in Dublin. (It's such an unusual name, that Father was able to make a number of direct contacts, here.) __________________________________________________ Children of ARTHUR LAWRENCE & NAN POWER DAVES ARTHUR DAVES DELMER LAWRENCE DAVES (their second son) LESTER DAVES MARGARET DAVES ARTHUR DAVES Married: - - - HELEN YOUNG LESTER DAVES Married: - - - EDWINA TOTHILL MARGARET DAVES Married: - - - RAY HOUCK DELMER LAWRENCE DAVES Born: July 24, 1904 in San Francisco, Calif.
