SESSION 14:IVY'S COUNTER STRIKE

"-Whadda yo mean we gotta talk to this Lynx. The last monster we talked to ate half the party." -Anon

After barely defeating Quarth in our game of chess, I returned to my room in the pale light of early dawn, and surprisingly slept, instead of meditating, in the lumpy, moth eaten, tavern bed.

I awoke quite suddenly, aware of another presence in the room, near my bed. I was certain it was Krill's counter attack, potentially an assassin sent to do me in. I had to act fast. I rolled to the left, leading with my arm, to give me a tactile sense of anything in my path, as I fell. I muttered under my breath as I realized someone, or thing was in my path. I felt flesh, and crushed my enemy with a powerful blow. It is difficult to describe the sensation one receives when one's fist breaks bone, and tears tissues. I leapt for my blades, drawing them as I span to face my opponent. What I found was quite shocking.

On my bed lay a sky clad woman dying from my attack. I almost panicked. Quickly, I rushed to perform what triage I knew. The severity of the wound was so great I could think of scant to do. Her ribcage had been crushed, the broken ribs stuck out like some roast at an orcan picnic. Her throat had been severed from the velocity at which her chest fell, and additionally four of her fingers had fallen off. I yelled "CLERIC", twice to no avail. Knowing that Rex was lodged right across the hall, I ran to his room and kicked the door open, explaining his services were necessary. Not surprisingly he was already awake, busy suffering the tender mercies of his brazen strumpets. He asked what all the commotion was about. I rushed him into my room despite the protests of his palaladings. Then Rex did something I will never forget. He actually saved someone's life. He even accomplished this marvel using no magic. By the time the inkeep had brought the local chiugeon, Rex had the woman stabilized, and was studying curative magic. Though I had to tolerate Rex's insinuations that I had been "doing" something with the young lady, he managed to do a good job.

While Rex was healing the women, I plotted out the best way to interrogate the woman, as to the reason for her sudden appearance in my bed. She would no doubt insinuate that I had invited her into my bed, HAH! The mere thought of this enflamed me. How could anyone be so stupid as to think, for even a second, that I would betray my beloved, back in Moria. Perhaps she thought that by causing such a commotion, I would be duty bound to marry her, or at least pay were-guild to her family, as I am married. A common ruse used by common folk. They usually don't expect nobility to make an issue of it, and simply pay the money, but I will never, could never, tolerate such a blow to my honor. The more I thought about it, however, the more I came to the realization that something more was here. After all I am a light meditator, and just about any one passing anywhere near me will bring me out of rest. She also managed to enter my room, even though I always lock the door....(NOTE TO GAME MASTER->).next time I will bar it using a chair as well. There were a number of possibilities as to why she was here.

  1. She was sent by Krill's followers as an assassin and she used magic/specialized skills to enter my room.
  2. She is a highly skilled thief, trying to steal my magical jewelry.
  3. She was beguiled/coerced to mar my reputation by Ivy.
Given the three most likely options I decided a stern approach was in order. I would threaten her with legal action, backed with magical corroboration of the truth, and the severest punitive measures that I could take against her, and her kin. When Rex had finished his work and was ready to leave I began my interrogation.

In a firm voice, I asked her why she was in my bed. She, predicatbly claimed I invited her there. The interrogation continued, and to her credit she stuck to her story. Rex implied that perhaps I had been involved with her. This was probably the biggest mistake Rex will ever make. I have tolerated quite a bit on this inane quest, but to stand and listen to such idiocy is more than I can stand. If this bafoon is bound and determined to have trouble with me, then so be it. I saved the sorry excuse for a priest, and my thanks is a slap in the face. In cases of betrayal I am not known to be either forgetful, or forgiving. One day Rex you will recieve your just due, one day soon.

I explained her situation to her. That she could very potentially be an assassin sent by Lord Krill's cronies, and her mysterious behavior justified my arresting her for furthur justice at the hands of Quarth. I reminded her that he has truth magics, so all would know the truth eventually, anyway. She still stuck to her story, so I bound her and led her out of the hotel. She whined, cried and pleaded to no avail. About half way to the Hall of Justice she broke down, relinquished the 5 gold she had been paid, and revealed that it was indeed Ivy who sent her after me.

Needless to say, I wasn't suprised. Although I must marvel at her "imaginative" approach. I knew the jester hadn't squeeled, and I that my behavior hadn't deviated from the norm during the entire party, so my only conclusions would have to be that either she was lashing out at me for her woes, and got lucky, or she had "inside" information. None of the group would suspect, except Fritzholm who would assume that because I was sitting inbetween him and the jester, and acted to keep a him from manhanling someone who seemed innocent, I was responsible for who knows what. He probably was acting on "inside" information too. There was the possibility that Rex had cast a divination spell, the kind vouyers use to spy on normal individuals, to gain insight into the jesters motives, but this seems very unlikely. Quite simply, Rex isn't that keen. So how would she be aware of such an act? Only she knows and she isn't saying.

The decisive action to solve the situation had to be enacted.
