ED 703 -- History of Literacy and Literacy Research

FALL 2003 -- Jay Lemke

This course will trace some of the important changes in our concept of literacy which continue to influence literacy research. From notations of speech and spoken meaning, to distinctly literate forms of text, to social and cultural meaning systems, to critical literacy, multi-literacies, and multimedia literacy. We will consider developments in our views about spoken vs. written language, writing as well as reading, the genre debate, the New Literacy Studies movement, home school and community language and literacy, and the relations of literacy to cognition and culture.
