Harms Elementary
School
This project was initiated in partnership with the Detroit Initiatives
Project, based in the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan.
The goal was to create an afterschool art curriculum and projects handbook
which would strengthen the students' science skills. This project was
completed successfully last spring and we are now working on an art
and mathematical measurement curriculum. Last semester we worked with
third, fourth and fifth graders to produce large scale paper mache imaginary
animals. The process combined the quantitative skills of scaling up
drawings, analyzing shapes, and measuring liquids with fantasy, personal
expression and cooperative work.
