God does not want anyone to be condemned to an eternity apart from him, an eternal death. Therefore he has provided an alternative to that fate. All we have to do is accept that alternative.
Our rebellion against God created a debt that must be paid if we are to be reconciled to God. However, the debt is too great for us to pay. We would cease to exist in the process of paying that debt. Jesus is the only one who could pay that debt and continue to exist.
Too often we complain that God is not fair. We are not THAT bad. God shouldn't judge us. However, this quote reminds me that we would be completely dissatisfied with a god who was not willing to judge at all. We all have a sense that there MUST be some standard by which people should be judged.
This is something that I need to be reminded of on a regular basis, because I am very prone to wasting time. This quote reminds me that I have only a very finite amount of time in which to live my life. And that I should use that time for purposes that really matter.
