"If, through some inscrutable act of providence, I were to lose all my faculties save one, I would choose to retain the gift of speech, for through it I would soon regain all the rest."-- Daniel Webster
This quote really sums up the importance of communication and thus applies directly to my research in brain-computer interfaces. I've delayed adding this quote to my quotation set for some time because I can't find an original source for it. I find it frequently attributed to Daniel Webster, but whenever I try to get to an original source, I find dead ends. If you find/know an original source, please let me know. "You cannot pray to a personal computer no matter how user- friendly it is."
--W. Bingham Hunter

Both my teaching and my research make me a heavy user of computers. This quote puts it all in perspective, though. Computers are tools, nothing more.

"God makes snowflakes; we crank out icecubes"
--D. A. Carson

I heard this quote at a conference I attended. It seemed to perfectly express the contrast between our mundane pursuits and the creative beauty and worldwide concern of God.

"Question: What do you teach?
Answer: Students."
--Arthur Holmes

I heard this quote at a conference and it really struck me as an important truth that is often forgotten by the modern university. Too often, we forget the students whose lives we are impacting and instead think that our real purpose at the university is to teach computing, or history, or physics. When we start thinking that way, students can get trampled in the rush.

"He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing."
-- Proverbs 27:14

I like this quote because it expresses my feelings about mornings so well. I am just not awake when I first wake up. Evenings are another matter entirely. And my husband still marvels at how cheerfully I can get up early in the morning to go birding. But most of the time, this verse sums it up perfectly.

"In the cross of Christ, justice and mercy come together."
-- James Paternoster

This just sums up the purpose of Jesus' death so beautifully! Jesus had to die because SOMEONE had to pay the price for our rebellion against God, in this way justice was maintained. Jesus had to die because he was the ONLY one for whom paying that price meant anything less than eternal separation from God, in this way, WE were shown mercy.

"The last days are getting laster."
-- Steve Horning
