My Signature File Quotes from Calvin Miller
I very much appreciate Calvin Miller's writings, especially his Singer Trilogy,
from which this quote (and the following two) were taken. His writings bring a sense of wonder
and freshness. They make me think about things in a new way, or reinforce
truths that I have come to take for granted.
"The world is poor because
her fortune is buried in the sky
and all her treasure maps
are of the earth."
--Calvin Miller
This quote reminds me that the ultimate purpose of my life is not what I can
gain here on earth.
"Death is a confirmation of
the believer's creed.
For the skeptic it is discovery,
immense and late."
--Calvin Miller
In our culture, we tend to forget that there are absolutes. This quote reminds me that it is not what we believe that really counts, it is what is true.
"Science can change the
compound states of matter
easier than it can change
its mind."
--Calvin Miller
This quote reminds me that while scientific fact can be proven incorrect, it often takes a long time for the incorrectness to be acknowledged. So it is good to remember that a scientific fact should not be trusted blindly. Its effects, predicitions, and assumptions should be evaluated.
