Creating a MARC Collection-level Record
To create a new collection record:
- The cataloger will receive from the Media Union selectors a set of
slides and a set of FileMaker Pro records (if available). The slide at
the left of the row in the plastic holder should be considered
authoritative for the collection theme and the rest of the items
in that row should be considered as parts of that collection.
- Enter MCAT, call up a visual images workform
new f
and fill in the following required fields:
- R/T: g (projected medium)
- BL: c (means collection-level record)
- E/L: _ (means full level record)
- DCF: a (means aacr2 standards used)
- Place: xx (means location not relevant)
- Lang: three blanks
- D/Code: k (range of years for bulk of collection)
- DT/1: (earliest digitization date of slides in col.)
- DT/2: 9999
- T/MAT: c=art reproduction, z=other
- TECH: n (not applicable)
- GOVT: blank
- A/MAT: blank (no accompanying matter)
- T/TIME: nnn (not applicable)
- 006 and 007 fields: 006 specifies representational type of file (m); 007 specifies remote file,
reproduction aspect, multicolor nature,
- Fill in the following required variable fields, adding addiitonal fields at the cataloger's discretion:
- 040: MiU|cMiU
- 245: [Cataloger composed title "digital image collection"] |h [electronic resource]/|c[collected
by the University of Michigan Library].
- 260: |c digitization dates of collection.
- 300: number of slides or other objects in the collection
- 440: : (Some collections may, themselves be considered parts of other collections. In
that case, a series authority record will be established for the larger collection, University
of Michigan buildings, for example. This should be done with the knowledge and agreement of the
Media Union selector)
- 520: Abstract or scope of content statement (" Study collection of digitized images of various views..."
- 65x: At least one LCSH term.
- 7xx: Established name forms for creators of component parts of collection
