365 feet long and 165 feet wide, this building was built in 1923 and is located along State Street.[39]  The original purpose of the field house was to provide space for football, basketball, baseball, and track events.  It was built at the cost of $563,168.[39]

Designed by Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls of Detroit, the building is Italian Romanesque in style with decorative details on the brick façade.  Large arched windows flooded the building with light on all sides.[39]  To make this structurally possible, large steel girders are necessary to support the roof.  When constructed, the building could easily fit a gridiron.  The floor was originally dirt, but a portable basketball floor could be brought in and an eight lap running track ran around the building. The arena could also seat 7,500 spectators in the stands running along the side.[39]  Since the second seating level was added recently, most people thought that major structural work had to be done to support it.  In actuality, fixtures for a second level were already installed when the building was constructed.[39]

For its time, it was one of the finest fieldhouses in the country.[39]  People still marvel at the beautiful architecture and its engineering today.  However, it is now the permanent home for the University of Michigan Hockey Team.  Over time, it has seen upgrades and renovations, including the addition of a second level as mentioned previously.  The building gets the name Yost Ice Arena, in honor of Fielding Yost, former football coach and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.[39]
