Located on Observatory
Street, just east of the Central Campus Recreational Building, Stockwell Hall is a five story red brick structure that
today house 418 girls. Funding for its
construction came through the Public Works Administration and university
bonds. The approximate cost of the
building was $1,000,000.[88]
Completed in 1940, the building is in the shape of an
L, with the longer side parallel to Observatory
Street. A two story structure projects from the
back side facing Palmer Field. It
contains a large, beautifully furnished lounge on the second floor with the
dining room on the lower level. The
residence was designed by C. William Palmer.[88]
The brick is accented with a decorative timber framework on the upper
levels as well as limestone trim.
The building is named in honor of Madelon
Louisa Stockwell, the first woman admitted to the
university.[88]
