South Quadrangle Today

Located on Madison Street, South Quad occupies nearly the entire block.  This eight story brick and reinforced concrete structure with basement cost about $5,600,000.[82]  It was designed by Andrew Morrison and constructed by Bryant and Detwiler Company of Detroit.[107]

In 1951, the building opened to 1,232 men.  The building is subdivided into seven houses (named after former professors), providing a sense of community within a larger environment.[82]  The ground floors of the building contain the cafeteria, lobbies, a convenience store, library, studies, and practice rooms.  The penthouse once contained a room devoted to studying and a broadcasting station.  Today, it also functions as an ITCS Computing Site and has a fitness center.[8]

Today, South Quad is a coed dormitory.
