While many of the other buildings on the athletic
campus are used for intercollegiate athletics, the Intramural Sports Building
provides facilities for the individual student.[34]
Located on Hoover Avenue,
the building was completed in 1928 at the cost of $743,000. It was designed by Hinchman
and Grylls of Detroit.[34]
The overall architecture of the building is similar to Yost Ice Arena,
except that the Intramural Sports Building is
longer, and shorter in width. The
style of architecture used is Lombard Romanesque.[34] Brick archways above the windows
provide an aesthetically pleasing façade looking down Hoover
Street. A beautiful large archway with the main
entrance breaks the rhythm along the building. A similar arch is located on the other
side.
Within the building is a 252 foot long gymnasium for
basketball, as well as space for indoor tennis, squash, handball, track
athletics, boxing, wrestling, and swimming.[34]
Today, this building is also known as the South Campus Recreation Building,
and still serves its original purpose.
