Built in 1954, this facility, mostly located underground, is used for examination and treatment of patients.  Designed by Black and Black of Lansing, it is built of high density concrete to prevent radiation from penetrating the confines of treatment rooms. [57]  Today the center is entirely obscured from the street because of surrounding buildings.  However, when it was built, it was accessible by an above-ground penthouse located just south of the breezeway connecting the Old Main Hospital (demolished) and Kresge Medical Research Building.[57]
