President’s House Today

The president’s house was one of the original four faculty houses located on the main campus.  Located on South University Avenue., it is the only one standing.[3].  Built in 1840, the white, stucco, three story home housed the first University of Michigan President, Henry Tappan.  It has housed all the presidents except Harry B. Hutchins.  A third story addition was added by President Haven along with an expanded kitchen, garage, study, and library added by later Presidents. [3]  Today, the central portion of the house is the oldest standing structure at U of M.
