The large nine story
double “Y” shaped hospital was opened in August of 1925. Although proposals were set for a new
hospital as early as 1917, difficulties obtaining sufficient funds, and the United
States’ involved in World War I
delayed plans.[61]
Construction was eventually begun in 1923 and the final cost of the
hospital was $3,395,961.[61] Sometimes referred to today as the old Main Hospital,
it was located on Ann Street
across form the Detroit Observatory.
The structure was constructed of concrete with the exterior faced in
sand brick and stone. A three story
building in front of the nine story structure containing the wards was the
administration building. Behind the
wards were the surgical wing and the Neuropsychiatry Institute. The Neuropsychiatry Institute was a five
story building built into the steep hill behind the main hospital.[61]
Each of these entities that make up the University Hospital Building were joined by corridors.
When it was constructed it was the “largest university hospital in America at
the time” with “two miles of corridors.”[7]
In 1931, two floors were added above the central
section of the main hospital. They
contained laboratories as well as additional space for patients.[61]
After the new University Hospital
was completed in 1986, Old Main Hospital
eventually faced the wrecking ball in 1989.[7]
