Helen Newberry Residence Receiving Maintenance

Located on Maynard Street with the front facing State Street, the Helen Newberry Residence is a four story building with a gray stucco exterior.[87]   Funds were provided by Mrs. Henry N. Joy, Truman H. Newberry, and John S. Newberry in honor of their mother, Helen H. Newberry.  The total cost amounted to $75,000.  The building originally belonged to the Student Christian Association, but was later turned over to the university in June of 1925.[87]

Designed by Kahn and Wilby of Detroit, the Helen Newberry Residence originally housed seventy nine girls.  That number progressively increased until it could accommodate 118 women in 1953.[87]

The building contains twenty-five single rooms, forty five double rooms, and three triples.[87]
