Natural Science Building Today

As the need for new classroom and laboratory space for scientific use became apparent 1913, the construction of a new facility became necessary.  In 1914, construction began on the four story building designed by Albert Kahn.[74]

The building is situated along North University with its south and east ends facing the Diag.  Formerly located on that site were two of the professor’s residents, which were later converted into other uses.[74]  The building has an architectural style, and employs a structural system similar to Albert Kahn’s factories.  This allowed the exterior of the building to be covered with large windows making the interior well lit.[74]  The building also has an open light court.  Despite its simple design, the brick facades are decorated with terra cotta ornamentation and stone trim.

Today, one may find the industrial theme continued on the inside.  The exposed pipes and electrical work make the building feel every utilitarian.  However, most of this building contains laboratories for research.  It also contains some classroom space, and a recently renovated auditorium.
