The construction of the Kresge Research Building began in 1953 and was funded through a generous gift of $3,000,000 from the Kresge Foundation.[59]  This five story, light brown, brick structure is accessible from Catherine Street, although, most of the building stretches parallel to East Ann Street.  It was designed by Giffels and Vallet, Inc. of Detroit and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of New York.  The building contains mostly laboratories and was originally linked to Old Main Hospital (demolished).[59]
