The
Medical Building
was among the earliest buildings constructed on the original forty acres of
the U of M campus. [79]
This three story building was constructed in 1850 to provide
laboratories and lecture space for the Medical Department, which came into
existence when the building opened.
The building also featured an anatomical laboratory and a large
lecture hall lit by a domed skylight on the second floor.[79]
Located on the eastern end of the campus, the building’s great
columned portico faced into the campus instead of the street.
Even after its opening, the building soon became
crowded. A four story addition at the
back was added in 1864 which doubled the available space. It also provided space for two new lecture
rooms.[79]
When the West Medical Building
(C.C. Little) was completed, the old Medical Building
was no longer useful. A fire in the
west portion of the building further jeopardized its existence. Although the front of the building was
saved, it became impractical to adapt it to modern uses, and was demolished
in 1914.[79]
The Randal Laboratory and Physics Building
stands on that site today.
